Zen is a Japanese word. It has a history. In India, it is known as a Dhyana. Dhyana means meditation. It travelled to China and became Chan. And from there it travelled to Japan and became Zen. So, Zen literally means meditation. I made Zen into an acronym. It stands for Zeal, Enlightenment, and Nirvana. Zeal is your enthusiasm, energy, and passion on that path. You can’t even move without energy. But energy in the wrong direction is very dangerous. So your energy has to be channeled in a positive and creative direction. In science, matter can be converted into energy. In spirituality, your energy (thought energy) can be converted into consciousness. Enlightenment is an experience. It is the experience of the cessation of your thoughts. It is a thoughtless awareness. Nirvana is the goal of Zen. Nirvana literally means blowing out of the lamp. So, it is blowing out of ignorance. It is blowing out of an ego. What is ego? Ego is an identification with the wrong sense of the Self. Getting identified with my body and mind as Self is a wrong sense of the Self. So, Nirvana is the experience of blowing out of this wrong sense of the Self. So, Zen is a meditation that should lead to Nirvana.

Zen means Zeal, Enlightenment, and Nirvana. Zen is the way of meditation. Enlightenment is an experience. And Nirvana is the goal. It is your ultimate freedom.
